Visa application requirements

Short term visas (for stays no longer than 90 days)

Tourist visa (for non remunerated activities)

  1. Visa application format
  2. 2 photographs (3.5cm x 4.5cm, color, white background, face uncovered) Refer to the following examples
  3. Original passport and copy of the ID page (the passport must have at least 2 pages available)
  4. Foreign residents in Mexico - FM card copy
  5. Entry and departure flight tickets 
  6. Visa or entry permit of the next country to visit after Japan, if applicable 
  7. Hotel reservations for the whole stay (if the reservation is not on your name, the reservation holder must handle a letter indicating that you will be sharing the accomodation with them, attach a copy of the reservation holder's ID) (If staying in the house of a relative or friend, the host must write an invitation letter (English templateJapanese template) indicating the duration of the stay, attaching a copy of their ID)
  8. Itinerary format indicating the details of your stay
  9. Working certificate indicating your position, salary and seniority in the company
  10. Last 3 months of payslips (self employed applicants, must handle a copy of the Articles of association and the last 3 months of tax returns)
  11. Last 3 months of savings account statements 
The Embassy of Japan may request additional documents if necessary. 
In case the economic solvency of the applicant is not sufficient, a guarantor must support their application handling documents 8 to 10 and the 
guarantee letter format

 

Transit visa (only for entries to take a connecting flight)

  1. Visa application format

  3. Original passport and copy of the ID page (the passport must have at least 2 pages available)
  4. Foreign residents in Mexico - FM card copy
  5. Entry and departure flight tickets 
  6. Visa or entry permit of the next country to visit after Japan 
  7. If staying in Japan - Hotel reservations for the whole stay (if the reservation is not on your name, the reservation holder must handle a letter indicating that you will be sharing the accomodation with them, attach a copy of the reservation holder's ID)

Long term visas (working and studying visas and holders of a Certificate of Eligibility)

  1. Visa application format
  2. 2 photographs (3.5cm x 4.5cm, color, white background, face uncovered) Refer to the following examples
  3. Original passport and copy of the ID page (the passport must have at least 2 pages available)
  4. Foreign residents in Mexico - FM card copy
  5. Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) and copy 
  6. For applicants with a CoE with the status of "Dependent" of a foreing resident - copy of the Residence Card of the relative living in Japan. 

Issuance time and visa fees

After the visa application has been accepted by the Embassy or Consulate, the issuance may require from 3 to 5 working days; however, special cases may take longer.
 
The approval or refusal of the visa will be communicated to the applicant by the Embassy or Consulate without any further explanation. 

Once the visa has been approved, the applicant must cover the visa issuance fee set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA). Fees will be paid in cash at the Consular window when receiving the visa. Mexicans and some other nationalities are exempt from visa issuance fees
